Candidate Biographies for the 2023 Board Election
I have been the captain of San Francisco Ice Theatre’s adult team for the past 2 years and represented SCSF at Adult Nationals in the Championship Masters Junior-Senior event this year. As a skater who grew up in the Bay Area, I also skated with SFIT as a youth in the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 seasons. I left the Bay Area to attend college at MIT, where I competed in intercollegiate competitions, served as president of the MIT Figure Skating Club, and joined the Club Sports Council overseeing all club sports at MIT. I returned to the Bay Area in 2020, just around the time SFIT was forming the adult team. It has been a fun and rewarding experience to skate with and help establish SFIT’s adult team, and I hope I can also help to serve the larger SCSF community!
I began playing hockey when I was 4 (I grew up in Canada!) and then switched to figure skating when I was 11 years old. I have been ice skating for 54 years now! I am a PSA (Professional Skater’s Association) double Master Rated coach in both Singles (Freestyle) and Skating Skills (Moves in the Field), a PSA examiner, have sat on the PSA Board of Governors, was the past PSA Seminars Chair, and was on the PSA National Education Committee. I was also fortunate enough to be asked to be a presenter at the PSA conferences in Chicago, Palm Springs, and again in Las Vegas.
San Francisco is now my home. More locally, I have been coaching for over 28 years in the San Francisco/Bay Area, serving as the Membership Chair for SCSF for many years, and helping out with the Test Chair duties when needed. Currently, it has also been my pleasure to serve as the President of the Board of Directors of The Skating Club of San Francisco, Inc. for the past 2 years and work with this strong, vibrant board that we have.
I still love the sport that I fell in love with all those many years ago, and, along with skating, I like to say that I try to teach my students to be well…well educated, well spoken, well rounded, well mannered, and well adjusted!
I would very much like to continue my work as President and Membership Chair on the Board of Directors, and continue to help foster an atmosphere of inclusion for all of our members. I still have many ideas to offer, and I hope you will put a check next to my name when you vote in this year’s election.
Thank You!
I am a figure skating coach and have been teaching in the Bay Area for 20 years. I am a USFS Double Gold Medalist and PSA Senior-Rated coach. I began skating in Hawaii when I was seven and have spent most of my life in the figure skating world. Prior to coaching full-time, I managed Belmont Iceland for 8 years. During that time, I joined the Skating Club of San Francisco and worked closely with the club to put on the annual Silver Spin Competition, the Gala fundraiser, and to create a positive club community in Belmont.
For the last two years, I’ve enjoyed being a member of the board and getting involved again with club activities. During the first year of my term, I worked with Leslie Duskin and Rebecca Hurst on the Test Team to get our Virtual Testing Program started. When Leslie stepped down from the Board, I took over as Test Chair and have been managing both the in-person and virtual testing programs.
I am honored to run again for the club board and to continue organizing opportunities for all of our skaters.
Hello fellow SCSF members,
My name is Jean Teng and I am the current Vice President of the Skating Club of San Francisco – a role I have served in for the last four years.
For those of you who don’t know me, I took up skating as an adult 14 years ago and immediately fell in love. Since then, I have actively competed on the adult level both nationally and internationally. Drawn by the sense of camaraderie and community, I hope to continue giving back to the sport that has given me so much.
Outside of skating, I am an attorney by profession. After several years of law firm life, I now work as an independent contractor focused on legal research and writing (which, not coincidentally, also allows more time for skating!). I live in San Francisco with my husband who doubles as an excellent skating cheerleader. I love to travel and cheer on our Bay Area sports teams (go Giants, Niners, and Warriors!).
I believe my experience as an active competitive adult skater who has strong ties to the international adult skating community brings a unique perspective to our board and club. I hope you will allow me to continue serving this community!
